Why Sailfish

Sailfish: three hulls in one, built for a smoother ride

Sailfish has been building saltwater fishing boats in Cairo, Georgia, since 1986. Every one rides on Sailfish’s exclusive Variable Degree Stepped (VDS) hull. Here’s how it works, what goes into the boat, and the questions to ask before you buy any center console or dual console.

Your 5 questions, answered

These are the questions we’d ask about any offshore fishing boat, answered for a Sailfish.

1. Center console or dual console?

A center console is built around fishing, with 360-degree access to fight a fish from anywhere on the boat. A dual console adds a walk-through windshield, a passenger console and more seating up front, so it works just as well for family cruising as it does for fishing. Sailfish builds both on the same VDS hull.

2. How will it ride when the water gets rough?

This is where Sailfish stands apart. Most boats use a single, straight deadrise angle. A Sailfish hull has three running surfaces at 24, 23 and 22 degrees, each doing a different job: cutting through waves, adding lift and holding steady at rest. See “The VDS hull” below.

3. What size and how much power do I need?

It depends on how far you run and how many people you bring. Tell us where you fish (inshore, nearshore or offshore), how big your crew is and what you tow with, and we’ll match the boat and the power to the way you use it. We rig Sailfish boats with Suzuki, Mercury and Yamaha outboards.

4. What’s it built from? Is there any wood?

No wood. Sailfish uses no wood in the hull, stringers or transom. Every boat is 100% composite, reinforced with Kevlar and carbon fiber, with stainless steel hardware. See “Built to last” below.

5. What’s covered under warranty?

Sailfish backs its boats with a 10-year hull warranty and a lifetime no-rot guarantee.* In the rare case you ever need it, our factory-certified technicians take care of Sailfish warranty work right here in our shop.

The VDS hull: three hulls in one

Most fishing boats are built on a hull with one deadrise angle from the keel to the chine. That forces a trade-off: a sharp angle rides soft but rocks at rest, and a flat angle is stable but pounds in a chop.

Sailfish’s exclusive Variable Degree Stepped (VDS) hull gets around that trade-off. It has three distinct running surfaces that run the length of the boat from bow to stern, each at its own angle and each with its own job:

24 degrees: cuts through the water. The deepest, sharpest surface is the entry. It slices into oncoming waves instead of slamming on top of them, for a softer ride when the bay or the ocean kicks up.

23 degrees: lift and efficiency. The middle surface lets air flow under the hull, reducing friction and helping the boat lift onto plane. Less drag means better fuel economy and more range from every tank.

22 degrees: stability at rest. The outer, flatter surface steadies the boat when you’re stopped, drifting or trolling. Less rocking in a swell means a more comfortable day, and fewer sea legs after a long fight with a fish.

What you feel on the water:

The VDS hull also gives Sailfish boats their deep cockpits and tall gunwales, which keep water out and help keep the crew secure, plus extra headroom in the console head compartments.

Built to last: how a Sailfish is made

A great hull design only matters if the boat underneath it is built to take years of saltwater. Here’s what goes into every Sailfish.

No wood. Anywhere. Sailfish uses absolutely no wood in the hull, stringers or transom. Every boat is 100% composite, so there’s nothing to rot or warp over time.

Reinforced with Kevlar and carbon fiber. The hulls and decks are reinforced with Kevlar and carbon fiber, the same high-strength materials used where weight and stiffness matter most.

An engineered stringer system. The stringer grid is the backbone of the boat. Sailfish designs it with computer-aided design, and the bulkheads, main beams and cross members interlock in exactly one orientation, so every boat is built the same way every time.

Molded foam, wrapped in fiberglass. Instead of drilling holes and injecting foam, Sailfish casts each stringer’s foam core in a mold, so it comes out perfectly formed, then wraps it in fiberglass.

Quadraxial fiberglass, laid by hand. Each stringer gets four layers of stitched, woven fiberglass, each layer turned 90 degrees from the last for strength in every direction. The grid is hand-laid and pressed into the hull so it bonds as one solid structure.

Saltwater-ready finish and hardware. Sailfish uses premium resins and gelcoats and stainless steel hardware throughout.

Built to industry standards. Sailfish builds to American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) standards and is NMMA certified.

Every Sailfish we sell is rigged, inspected and delivered by our own factory-certified service team.
